RIP Prince Dead at 57

By Donna Ross-Jones.

Prince, the only performer iconic enough to drop his name and become a symbol instead, is dead at 57.  He was living proof that being yourself no matter what the world says, can lead to phenomenal success.

When I think of Prince my first thought is always DAMN!! big things come in small packages. He was a dynamo in heels, a personality, a talent bigger than life. His musicianship could not be touched, he played every instrument and the songs he wrote..the songs!  One of the most phenomenal bodies of music ever! Which makes me think of the movie Purple Rain and the soundtrack that haunted me and all the songs I still play today.

In hearing the news this morning I also thought about artists I worked with Eddie Murphy and Rick James style icons on all levels who influenced and were emulated by millions (and who each like Prince had an affinity for leather :). These artist blew up in the same decade breaking barriers and boundaries. They were brilliant, larger than life (Ed still is) one of a kind artists who pushed the envelope and achieved massive mainstream success that had been unimaginable for “Black”  artists until these guys.  They watched each other, emulated one another in their unique ways, and Rick and Prince competed with one another. From where I sat, they also clearly admired and respected each other for their talent and what each had accomplished.  And maybe, they also knew they were connected by their iconic success and the pressure that accompanied it.

Thank you Prince for the gifts you gave to all of us. You will not be “Formerly” Known As…you will be “Forever” Known AS  the iconic musical genius, social change agent we loved, PRINCE.  RIP
