Russia threatens Denmark with nuclear attack

Russian diplomacy has spent months concentrating all of its power to persuade the Danish Government to not be integrated into the missile defense system of NATO, which Moscow sees as a threat to its security. Given the repeated disregard of the Danish Executive to its arguments, the Russian ambassador in Copenhagen has significantly raised the tone of the speech and said that Moscow would fire nuclear missiles to Scandinavian boats,  if he joined the anti-missile system of the alliance.

“I do not think the Danes fully understand the consequences of what will happen if Denmark joins the missile defense system led by the United States. If this happens, Danish war ships will become targets of Russian nuclear missiles,” he said, while stressing that if Denmark is involved in this project, their “relations with Russia will suffer serious damage.”

Reviews of Ambassador Mikhail Vanin, published in Jyllands-Posten, have raised a huge media dust and caused a strong response from the Danish Foreign Minister Martin Lidegaard, who has described the remarks as “unacceptable”. “It has crossed the line,” answered Vanin, saying that the system “all join” “in the future will be targets of Russian ballistic missiles.”

The Danish Government has decided, however, that the most profitable is “trying to tone down” and avoid a confrontation of words between the two countries. Martin Lidegaard recalled that NATO’s missile shield in Europe is not directed against Russia. “Russia knows well that the missile defense system NATO is defensive and is not aimed against Moscow” said, but has no intention of backtracking on the agreement last August to contribute to NATO missile shield with at least one frigate with advanced radar.

Russia strongly opposes the anti-missile system, which plans to establish bases in Romania and Poland. The US ambassador to Denmark, Rufus Gifford, written for his part in his Twitter account that Vanin’s comments “do not inspire confidence” and contribute to peace and stability. “This has never had anything to do with Russia,” said Lidegaard on the missile shield, adding that the system is intended to protect against rogue states and terrorist organizations, among other concerns.

Crisis in Ukraine

In 2014, due to the special geopolitical situation created by the crisis in Ukraine, United States and NATO suspended dialogue with Russia on missile shield in Europe. According to Russian military doctrine, the creation and deployment of strategic missile defense systems, which in his view undermines global stability and break the status quo in the nuclear field, is one of the major external threats to the Russian nation.

The chief of Russia Valery Gerasimov, recently noted that the missile defense system uses NATO launch ramps like those used to fire cruise missiles from the sea, in violation of the Treaty on Elimination of Nuclear Missile Medium and Short Range (INF Treaty). Gerasimov announced that the Russian Navy will be equipped with systems capable of neutralizing the US missile shield.

So far, Denmark has stood out among the countries that proportionately sent more humanitarian aid to Ukraine. “If there is an escalation of the conflict it must aggravate the penalties, but if the situation in Ukraine really changes and there distension, then you should reduce the sanctions,” said the Foreign Minister assured that “when a great power as Russia has a greater responsibility for conflict, there must be a reaction from the international community. “
