Hardship License Work Letter

If you, like most people, are dependent on your car for your daily activities, having a revoked or suspended license must definitely signify a hardship. You would like to be able to go to work, to school, to the doctor and to any other place you usually visit without having to think twice about how to get there.

However, with a suspended license you may just wish to do something that will allow you to go to work or to receive your medical treatment. Applying to get a restricted license will certainly help you in that respect. Getting a hardship license will permit you to drive to and from work or school and to your medical appointments. And if you are a parent, you might be able to drive your kids to school and to their other necessary appointments.

What is a “work letter” and why is it needed when applying for a hardship license case?

A work letter is a requirement when applying for a hardship license. It is a way for you to convey to the judge what your situation is. It must also state clearly that you are willing to accept any conditions that will be attached to the hardship license. In some cases, the license has as a requirement that your vehicle is fitted with a special type of tracker that will signal your location at all times. Other restrictions might include only allowing you to drive at a certain speed or at certain times during the day and no more than 12 hours per day.

What are the work letter requirements?

The hardship license work letter should be written on company letterhead and clearly state your name, your relationship with your employer and your work schedule. It is also useful to include information regarding your specific driving needs during the day. And if arriving at work using public transportation is not realistic or it would take an excessive amount of time, it should also be stated in the letter.

In certain situations, it may be impossible to get a letter on company letterhead, like when a minor who is not employed needs one. A minor might live in a remote area where no public transportation is available and need to drive their parents to and from medical appointments. Sticking to the facts, the minor could write a letter explaining the situation, making sure the letter is properly written with no grammatical or spelling mistakes.

Also, the letter should be short, preferably not longer than one page, and make reference only to facts and not to emotions and feelings. Go over it as many times as needed to make sure it is not full of spelling or grammatical mistakes. And don’t forget to make a copy for your own records.
