Will the Cowboys Ever Win the Super Bowl Again?

Figure 1 It has been a while since the Cowboys ruled football

The Dallas Cowboys are considered to be America’s Team. That nickname may seem to be from a bygone age for a lot of football fans these days but it is still the wealthiest team of any sport across the globe. There may not have been many Super Bowl victories recently – but the money has continued to roll in.

While Cowboys fans ask ‘is online betting legal in Texas’ to discover whether they can put their money where their mouth is, the rest of the NFL improves and makes that championship game seem ever further away. But can the Cowboys ever win the Super Bowl again? Ever is a long time – but read on to find out whether there is at least a chance.

Glory Days

Something must still be going right in Arlington for the nationwide love the Cowboys evoke. But the simple fact is that Dallas has not gotten close to a Super Bowl since the 1990s. Throughout the 1970s and early 80s the Cowboys were postseason regular, reaching the big game five times – and winning it twice.

A short period of restructuring occurred before Dallas once again became America’s team and won three Super Bowls in just four years in the early 1990s. It seemed like the winning days would never end. But there has been very little playoff success in recent times and another Super Bowl triumph now seems a long way off.

Recent Seasons

The Cowboys’ most recent trip to size up for Super Bowl winners’ rings was in 1995. Since that time they have only made the playoffs 11 times in 27 years. Most of those seasons have seen Dallas play one wild card game and then pack up their things. Deep runs into the postseason have not been common.

The most recent years have been even more disappointing, with no playoff action at all in 2020 and 2021. But things did look better last year. Dallas raced to 6-1 and was looking good. Even a tail off didn’t stop it picking up the NFC East. But a loss to the 49ers in the wild card game ended head coach Mike McCarthy’s first taste of the playoffs in Texas.

Is Dak Back?

When Dak Prescott entered the NFL in the fourth round of the 2016 Draft he was initially projected to be the back-up QB for Tony Romo. But an injury gave the former Mississippi State shot caller his chance and it seemed as though the league had not given him enough respect.

After missing a big chunk of the 2020 season with an ankle injury, Prescott was back to his very best last year. The downturn in the middle of the season was unfortunate but it did indeed look as though Dak was back. But the 49ers loss was a bitter blow and it will be interesting to see how he – and the team – recovers.

This Season’s Match-Ups

As last year, the Cowboys start the season against Tampa Bay. Even though they lost to the Bucs in 2021, that didn’t stop a 6-1 run happening – but that doesn’t look like being the case this season. There are trips to take on the Bengals and the Rams before week 6, as well as home games against improved NFC East divisional rivals.

The second half of the regular season does look like being a little easier, with games against the likes of the Texans and Jaguars being must-win weeks. More important will be the divisional games against Philly and Washington in the last three weeks. They could make or break a shot at the playoffs.

Super Bowl Favorite?

A simple answer to this question would be ‘no’. Although the Cowboys won the NFC East last year it has been the weakest division in the league for a while now and is still poorly ranked. The Commanders and Eagles have improved, with the Giants set to be better thanks to them sticking with Daniel Jones at QB.

Prescott always plays better with a better supporting cast though – and Jalen Tolbert is set to give him more choices again this year. But getting past that first game of the postseason still looks a way off (even if Dallas gets that far).
