9 Ways to Detox your Body

As we go about our lives, we are all exposed to chemicals on a daily basis, lots of which are not good for health. There are the ones that are in the environment, such as pollutants from engine fumes, and there are the ones we absorb by what we deliberately put into our bodies, such as food and alcohol. Exposure to some substances and chemicals over time can cause lots of different health conditions. If you’ve been eating unhealthily or indulging in few alcoholic drinks after work every night, then your body is probably ready for a detox. Here are some effective ways that you can detox your body and begin a path to restored health.

  1. Water

One of the most fundamental components of health, water has to be the first go-to source for detoxing the body. Every cell in the body requires water to function properly, so staying hydrated is important. Drinking water helps to flush out toxins, helping to rid the body of impurities.

When using water for detox, you want to consider infusing it with other fruits and vegetables to boost the number of beneficial effects.

Lemon detox water has long been used as a cleanser for the body. Full of Vitamin C and nutrients such as magnesium, lemon juice has many health benefits. Drinking a glass of water and lemon juice stimulates the liver into making bile that keeps everything moving through the digestive tract. Lemon water is also a mild diuretic, meaning you might need to urinate more frequently. More urination means that more toxins are being flushed out of your system, helping to detoxify your body and also your skin.

  1. Tea

Drinking cups of tea, or herbal teas, are a great way to nourish your body as well as cleanse it. Normal black and green teas are rich in antioxidants which help in reducing oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Free radicals are atoms that are absorbed into our bodies through from a variety of things, such as the foods we eat or our environment, and they react with the oxygen in our bodies and over time cause damage to cells. Drinking tea helps to clear free radicals from our system. Green Matcha tea has more antioxidants in than ordinary green and black tea; making it good to use while detoxing.

Herbal teas that are effective to detox are lemongrass, ginger, red clover and milk thistle, and are again rich in antioxidants to help cleanse your body.

  1. Cut out Sugar

Sugar can be addictive. Eating sweet foods make us feel good in the short term, but then we experience a drop in energy, known as a ‘sugar crash’ which makes some people crave more. A diet that is rich in sugar makes us put on weight and gives us dull looking skin.

Reducing sugar, or cutting it out entirely, has lots of health benefits. Sugar makes the body produce insulin, and this can put a strain on your other organs and lead to health conditions such as fatigues, diabetes or cancers.

It might take you a few weeks to get used to not having sugary snacks and drinks, but having glowing skin, no bags under your eyes and a slimmer look is an incentive to help you stick at it! Also, you will find that it does become easier as your palate changes. Often, people who quit sugar balk at the taste of a hot beverage with sugar added, where once it would have been their regular drink.

  1. Diet

Eating healthy food is key to having a healthy body. What you put into your body, you will get the same out. For example, a diet that consists of fried unhealthy foods will result in a body that is overweight, sluggish and prone to health conditions. The foods we eat have a huge effect on the toxic load we carry. Processed food, preservatives, e-numbers can all build up toxicity in the body. To help detox your body, eat fresh, plant-based foods as well as lean proteins and healthy fats. Try to eat organic produce wherever possible, as they are grown in soil free from synthetic fertilizers and with no use of harmful pesticides that become part of the food chain.

Remember, the food we eat is the fuel on which our bodies run. Use good fuel to get your body working like a well-kept machine!

  1. Fasting

Fasting is a period of time where no food is eaten. Fasts are usually for a few hours up to two days. Fasting helps eliminate toxins stored in our bodies because when no food is eaten, our bodies turn to fat stores to use as energy. When these fat stores are used, the toxins that are there also are released and eliminated through the functioning of different organs such as the colon, liver, kidneys, and lungs.

If you feel that fasting is too difficult, you could try intermittent fasting. This is when no food is eaten for some hours, such as no food between 6pm and 11am, giving you a seventeen hour fast. The benefit of this is that most of the fasting hours are at night when you are sleeping, so it makes going without food much easier.

  1. Exercise

We all know that exercise is good for our overall level of fitness, but it can also be an effective way to detox the body too. When we exercise, it quickens the circulation of blood and the lymphatic system. Cardiovascular exercise gets our heart rate up, so is the most effective form of exercise to get the blood pumping.

When we first begin to exercise, our body gets its energy from glycogen stores, which are the easiest go-to source. After around fifteen minutes of exercise, the body switches to its fat stores to use as energy. Toxins become trapped in this stored fat, so when it gets used by the body, it releases those toxins so they can be removed.

When we work up a sweat, it not only cleanses our systems but increase the production of happy hormones and endorphins in the brain, so we feel more relaxed and in a better mood after we have exercised. With all the health benefits it brings, doing regular exercise a priority is a must for a healthy body.

  1. Eliminate Alcohol

Taking a break from drinking alcohol is an effective way to help your body recover from toxic overload. Drinking on a daily basis can cause health issues that affect the brain, heart, and liver. Binge drinking, where you consume excessive alcohol one time, is also harmful to health, as your liver struggles to clear your blood.

When detoxing your body, you need to rid your system of alcohol completely to feel the beneficial effects.

If you do drink most days, try to have at least two consecutive days without alcohol to allow your body to recover. It can be easy to fall into a habit of having a glass or two of wine every night, but over time it can have a detrimental effect on health. It is also important to seek help for any kind of alcohol abuse before it develops into more serious conditions such as a person becoming an alcoholic.

  1. Quit Smoking

Every time you inhale the smoke from a cigarette, you are putting hundreds of different kinds of toxic compounds into your bloodstream. Imagine doing this every day, for a number of years. The sheer amount of chemical build up from smoking causes a number of health issues, including respiratory diseases and cancer, so quitting for good is one of the best ways to help your health and to detox your body if you are a smoker.

There is much help available for quitting smoking, and talking it over with a medical professional is a good place to start.

  1. Professional Services

If you take recreational drugs, stop. You are adding harmful toxins to your body that can cause significant long-term damage. If you are addicted to any kind of drug or are using alcohol excessively, then seeking help can be the first step to recovery. You can call your local drug or rehabilitation center for advice, or discover more information on helping others recover from addiction.

When you detox your body, you gain a new lease of energy and sense of well-being. Getting rid of all the harmful compounds that build up in our bodies help us to feel better and look better too. The level of detox is up to you, so if you find it overwhelming to do it all at once, try making small changes to your life and stick to them. This could mean that for a month you focus on cutting out sugar, and when that has become a habit that is easy to stick to, move on to getting more exercise. If you smoke or take drugs, freeing yourself of that burden should be a priority. Once you do that, you will be able to take your life in a positive direction and have a healthier, happier future.
