Copy and Pasting The Real World: The Next Big Thing In AR

Augmented reality has been with us as a piece of technology for a short while now, and it’s an impressive development. You can see things that aren’t there, but you can’t touch them or interact with them, and so all of its uses to date have been linked to the world of entertainment. The case went from being in the background of his apartment to being front and center on his document in a matter of moments. 

Cynics will be quick to point out that this is already possible. If you have a phone with a good camera, you can easily take a picture of something around you, edit the picture on your phone, and then send it to your computer to be edited and placed into any document you choose. They’re right, but this process was far smoother. Diagne’s computer knew that the phone was attempting to send it an image, and it knew where to put it. The software Diagne has written identified that the camera was pointed at the document, and also identified the area of the document that Diagne was focusing on. At the same time, it eliminated the background of the vase and therefore posted only the image of the vase as a PNG file with no need for further editing. The same effect could have been achieved using existing methods – but it would have been a far more laborious process. This isn’t about offering users something brand new – it’s about offering them something that they already have, but much faster and far more conveniently. 

While the version of the code that Diagne has built for personal use clearly works, it’s specific to his phone and his computer. It would require editing and adapting in order to make a product that worked universally – but he’s happy for aspiring programmers to try. Instead of hoarding the project for himself, Diagne has made his code open-source and posted it on Github for other people to shape and mold for their own purposes. The possibilities of what the software could do are almost endless, but there is obvious commercial potential in his work. Personalizing everything from greetings cards to t-shirts could be the work of seconds rather than minutes or hours in the very near future. Find the perfect stock image for your project will no longer involve trawling through endless possibilities online – if you have the perfect object in your home, the software can pick it up, sharpen it, trim away the unwanted background elements and deposit it in the middle of your program without ruining your layout. To put it another way, it’s a designer’s dream.

As the code is now available online, we suspect it’s a matter of time until someone uses it for a commercial endeavor. It might take a while to solve the problem of making the software work universally across all devices – especially where different security protocols exist from device to device – but the problem should be relatively easy to solve for the right developer or developers. Based on what we’ve seen – and you can see yourself on his Twitter account – Diagne’s work may just have ushered us out of the era where augmented reality is the preserve of gamers, and into an era where it’s a vital part of any designer’s toolkit. Guidelines for STP-Ready Reporting

Just as you thought you’re all set to lodge your Single Touch Payroll (STP) report to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO),  you have to remind yourself of strict compliance with the reporting requirements. In order for you to meet your STP obligations, we have highlighted these guidelines for employers:

• You are mandated to submit a report of a pay event to the ATO on or before the pay date. The report must consist of information for each employee with an amount subject to withholding paid in that regular pay cycle.

• The report must include the year-to-date values of gross salary, allowances, deductions and PAYG withholding for every employee included in that pay cycle.  

• You are required to report year-to-date employer ordinary time earnings (OTE) amounts for each employee included in that pay cycle.  

• Your report must include period gross salary and PAYG withholding for all employee payments in that pay cycle.

• Your report must include all payees’ tax file number (TFN) or Australian business number (ABN).

• A pay event must contain at least one employee record and can only include one record for each employee.

• You may lodge multiple pay event documents on the same day. 

Reporting founded on your present business structure

Utilising one of a variety of STP solutions, STP reporting can be based on how your payroll is currently formed. The pay event should be set up at an ABN, a branch, or through a business management software identifier (BMS) ID level.

For PAYG withholding branches, they must report and pay PAYG withholding individually for each branch. 

For Multiple payroll solutions, you can submit separate reports from each payroll solution. This will be classified by the payroll solution through a unique BMS ID.

Note: If there are changes to your business structure, the ABN and branch under which you have been creating your STP reporting, may also change. If this happens you are required to decide your STP reporting under the ABN or branch you have been generating for your STP reporting before you lose access to it.  Begin your STP reporting under the new ABN or branch utilizing zero year-to-date employee amounts. 

For multiple employee records under the same ABN or branch, you must report each payroll record of the employee using a rare payee payroll ID.  These different payee payroll IDs will be considered as a unique record for STP reporting and must have different year-to-date amounts for each payee payroll ID.

Reporting out of the cycle

Aside from the regular pay cycle, business owners can make other payments to employees such as commissions, bonuses, or back payments. These types of payments fall under out-of-cycle reporting and may be reported by either lodging a pay event on or before the day you made the payment; including the out-of-cycle payment made to the employee in the succeeding regular pay event you lodge, or at the time the actual pay is calculated.

Employment termination payment

An employment termination payment (ETP) must be reported in a pay event on or before the payment date.  If the payment is not part of your regular pay cycle, you may practice the same rules that of out-of-cycle payments. 

If you pay multiple ETP on the same day, they must be labelled separately if the ETP type code is different.

If you pay ETP in multiple instalments, you should report each payment individually. 

Reporting foreign employment income

Payments made to employees working overseas depends on various factors, such as the applicable tax treaties and the time in the foreign country.

If amounts are denied in a foreign country, payments to an employee posted to a foreign country are required to be reported as foreign employment income.  If no amounts are denied for the foreign country, then payments to an employee should be reported as individual non-business payment types.  

The employer must report payments made to employees posted in a foreign country throughout the year and make adjustments as mandated. The adjustments can be made throughout the year or at the end.  

The employer is required to adhere to accounting for overseas tax instructions.

Reporting Death benefit ETP 

If you make a payment for a death benefit ETP, you may report this payment via STP and make a finalisation declaration about this payment.  In doing so, you will be excused from generating a payment summary and payment summary annual report.

You should report the estate beneficiary TFN if the employer has been provided with the details. The estate beneficiary could be an individual TFN where the beneficiary is a dependent or non-dependent.

If you make multiple ETP payments to the same beneficiary in the same financial year, you must submit a separate report for each payment.

The Iran Nuclear Deal was one of Barak Obama’s signature policies, which he signed in 2015. However, the agreement has been riddled with problems, and under the new presidency of Donald Trump, the US withdrew from the agreement.

 

The US Pulls Out of the Agreement

 

In May 2018, President Trump made good on his election promise and pulled the United States out of the JCPOA. Trump insisted the deal was a bad one for the States and reinstalled sanctions on Iran. 

Although the agreement still exists — since all the other signatories are still signed up to the agreement — the US’s withdrawal has led Iran to continually exceed its uranium enrichment limits, essentially rendering the agreement useless. 

However, the other signatories have not given up on the deal, with Germany and France invoking a clause that calls for conflict resolution.

While this has been playing out, evidence has suggested that Iran wasn’t fully compliant with the agreement from the beginning, and therefore, questions have to be asked about the effectiveness of the agreement in the first place. 

With other sources questioning whether Iran was honest about its nuclear ambitions, Trump’s policy of pulling out of the agreement with a view to renegotiating a stronger agreement could turn out to be solid foreign policy. 

 

Why Did the US Pull Out?

 

Not only were there doubts about whether Iran was complying with the requirements of the agreement, but there were also conflicts in other areas of foreign policy. Tensions were high between the two countries over the Civil War in Syria, where Iran was seen as meddling in the area and funding proxy terrorist groups. 

Relations hit a low ebb in 2020 when Iranian general, Qasem Soleimani was killed in a US airstrike. Iran retaliated by targeting US troops with ballistic missiles. 

Meanwhile, strong economic sanctions have been taking hold on the Iranian economy, but Iran has continued to enrich uranium to the point where it is believed they are about a year away from a nuclear weapon.  Even though Iran is being hit by pressure from the Corona Virus, the U.S. should not assist Iran, other than to disarm.

 

What Happens Now?

 

The Iran Nuclear Agreement might not be the first thing on people’s minds at the moment, but you can be assured it will still be a key issue in the White House. For a myriad of reasons, the JCPOA isn’t effectively deterring Iran from creating nuclear weapons, and the Trump administration will be carefully planning its next step. 

Trump stated his wish to renegotiate the deal in his election campaign and that’s something that is still possible. The Iranian economy is struggling with the impact of economic sanctions, and Trump might use this to renegotiate a better deal that can manage Iranian nuclear ambitions.

Budgeting for Travel After The Pandemic

We’re living in tough times right now. As the world grapples with the current health crisis, wondering whether some things have changed forever, we can’t deny that there is a huge group of us who can’t wait for things to get back to ‘normal,’ whatever normal will look like after the pandemic recedes.

There seem to be a million and one things to think about at the moment – mostly to do with hand sanitizer and personal protective equipment – and planning your next holiday or getaway might only be on the edges of your mind. This will vary a lot depending on the country and the city you’re in. For example, a Zone 1-6 travelcard for London, UK, is nearly $16, yet a one-way trip on Kyiv’s metro is less than a dollar.
• Food – If you’re going all-inclusive, you won’t need to worry too much about food, but it might be worth getting some snacks in to keep in your bag or hotel room anyway. If you’re not traveling all-inclusive, find out how much the average meal is and budget accordingly, overestimating each meal just in case.

Special/general damages – What is the difference?
